The use of spreadsheets in investigating Goldbach's 'Other' Conjecture aptly illustrates the effectiveness of spreadsheets as a research tool - not only in the role of quickly exhausting all possible cases, but also in the role of revealing, in a very visual way, patterns that would otherwise remain hidden.
