This report describes a World-Wide Web-based Mathematica application for studying a genetic algorithm. The application was installed on a server maintained by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to explore the possibilities of using the World-Wide Web for distance education. The paper includes a description of the genetic algorithm and its modification from Mathematica notebook to Web-based computational engine. A related discussion of instructional design issues leads to preliminary conclusions about using the World-Wide Web for mathematics instruction.
