Brief Instructions for the Test

Note: You can access this screen at any point by clicking on the "Test Help" button on the top bar.

Sequential mode and random access mode

The test can be taken in two modes:

To begin working on problems in the sequential mode, (i.e., Problem 1, Problem 2, etc.), please click on the "View Problem" button on the top bar. After you finish a problem, you will advance to the subsequent one using the "Next Problem" button.

Alternatively, you can select "Problem List & Report" to see the list of all the problems, from which you will be able to select problems you want to tackle. This is what we refer to as the random access mode.

Entering Expressions

It is a good idea to use extra parenthese to make the order of operations clear. The symbols +-*/ to denote addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, respectively. The caret (^) is used to raise an expression to a power. The constants e and pi can be used. The following functions are recognized: sqrt, ln, exp, abs. (The absolute value can also be signified using the vertical bar notaton.) Also recognized are the six trigonometric functions and their inverses (denoted by arcsin, arccos, etc.) Make sure that the function name is followed by its argument in parentheses.

Hints and Scoring

Every problem is worth 10 points. However, if you decide to see a hint for the problem, then 5 points will be taken off. Also, make sure you supply the constant of integration in every answer - failing to do so will also cost you some credit.

You can see your current score on the "Problem List and Progress Report" screen.
