Math is empowering! The Department of
Mathematics and Statistics gives students the skills to compete
in a rapidly changing, technological and information-based world
and succeed in a wide choice of career fields such as medicine,
bioinformatics, engineering, oceanography and economics. The department’s
extensive computer labs and use of technology in instruction has
helped Old Dominion become an acknowledged leader in technological
innovations in education. The Center for Computational Sciences
provides leadership for interdisciplinary research projects that
combine the thrill of new discovery with the analytical and statistical
specialization required to decipher large information databases.
Currently under construction, the Engineering and Computational
Sciences building will soon house extensive computing resources
and bring together faculty with diverse research interests. Students
in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics not only receive
an excellent education but also have the opportunity to participate
in research and help shape the future of informatics as a discipline.
