CHAIR/PROFESSOR DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS AND STATISTICS OLD DOMINION UNIVERSITY, NORFOLK, VIRGINIA Applications and Nominations are invited for the position of Department Chair, Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Old Dominion University. The faculty seek a dynamic personality with a distinguished record of scholarly productivity, excellent communication and administrative skills who will provide leadership in faculty and staff development. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in a mathematical science, be eligible for appointment as Full Professor, and demonstrate a strong commitment to promoting continued growth of the department's research and educational programs and to developing interdisciplinary research initiatives. Old Dominion University is a Carnegie Doctoral/Research Extensive institution with 19,000 students and over 600 full-time faculty. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is one of seven degree-granting units in the College of Sciences and currently has 25 full-time faculty. The department offers B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. Current research in the department focuses on various areas of applied and computational mathematics and statistics such as theoretical and computational fluid dynamics, elasticity and fracture mechanics, radiation transport, acoustics, finite element analysis, optimization, mathematical biology and biostatistics. The department is participating in a nine-institution cooperative agreement from the DOE under the Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing (SciDAC) initiative to build an integrated software infrastructure center for partial differential equation-based modeling. A Center for Computational Science headed by previous chair Dr. David Keyes, in which the department plays a prominent role, has recently been established. Excellent collaborative research and educational opportunities are available at the NASA-Langley Research Center, Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, Eastern Virginia Medical School and the Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center, as well as in the other departments within the university.
