Mrs. Hutchinson received the B.A. in Mathematics from Catholic University of America in 1980, and the M.S. in Mathematics from California State University at Fresno in 1988. In 1995 she joined Old Dominion University as a Lecturer. She had served as an Instructor on the faculty at Christopher Newport University (1992-1995) and University of Nebraska at Omaha (1990-1992).
