GENERAL INFORMATION |
Our departmental specialties in applied mathematics and statistics give students the skills to compete and succeed in a rapidly changing, technological and information-based world. Applied mathematics deals with the application of mathematics to the solution of problems arising in other fields, and statistics is the study of all the methods by which we draw information from scientific data. Such problems may originate not only in specifically math-oriented disciplines (physics, chemistry and engineering) but in such far-ranging areas as geology, oceanography, biology, medicine, economics, business and even the social sciences. As a major in our department you will learn to use methods of applied mathematics, probability, statistics, numerical analysis, and scientific computing in seeking solutions to such problems.
Old Dominion University is an acknowledged leader in technological innovation in education, and nowhere is this more evident than in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. We have electronic classrooms serving an ever-expanding list of courses in areas including calculus, statistics and geometry. Open computer laboratories are available to students enrolled in computer-based courses. These labs are partly manned by teams of our upper level undergraduates, providing employment opportunities for our more talented majors and another component of the unique educational experience you will find here.
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers a program of study with three optional tracks, each leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science. The three tracks are:
With proper planning a departmental major can complete a Master's degree in applied mathematics, statistics, or biostatistics with just one additional year of study and, if properly qualified, receive financial support for the Master's degree. The Department also offers a doctoral program in computational and applied mathematics.
Internships may be available to both talented undergraduate and
graduate students. In recent times our students have held such
positions with Virginia Chemicals, NASA and with Eastern Virginia
Medical School.
