Title: Data Mining: Concepts and Algorithms

Prof. Jiming Peng
Department of Computing and Software
McMaster University
Hamilton, Ontario

In this talk we give an introduction to a newly-emerging multidisciplinary field: Data Mining. We will present fundamental concepts and discuss main tasks in data mining. These include classification, association, prediction and clustering. Machine-learning algorithms based on decision tree and Bayes' model will be described. If time allows, the preprocess and postprocess of data mining will be discussed as well.

After receiving Ph.D. with Cum Laude from Delft University of Technology, Holland, 2001, Dr. Peng joined McMaster University as an assistant professor. His research interests include numerical algorithms for variational inequalities and complementarity problems, interior-point methods, machine learning algorithms, and applications in data mining. Due to his outstanding research, Prof. Peng received the Stieltjes prize in 2001 and Ontario Premier Research Excellence Awards in 2003.
