Course Grade

Your course grade will be computed from the following components:

In-Class Assessments

5% + up to 2% bonus

During a typical class, question(s) will be asked to assess your understanding of the material. See the section In-Class Assessments for more information.

Online Quizzes

15%

Approximately 12 quizzes are going to be given weekly, during most weeks. See the section Quizzes for more information.

Two Class Tests

The letter grades will be assigned as follows:

A- : 90% - 91.9%

A : 92% - 100%

B- : 80% - 81.9%

B : 82% - 87.9%

B+ : 88% - 89.9%

C- : 70% - 71.9%

C : 72% - 77.9%

C+ : 78% - 79.9%

D- : 60% - 61.9%

D : 62% - 67.9%

D+ : 68% - 69.9%

In-Class Assessments

During a typical class, some question(s) will be asked to assess your understanding of the material. In order to participate, you will need to bring to every class a device capable of sending either e-mail or text messages.

Additional information (e.g., the required format of the email or text responses) will be given in class.

Of the seven points (5% + up to 2% bonus) which can be earned via the in-class assessments toward the course grade

  • up to 4 points will be allocated based on participation and
  • up to 3 points will be given for the number of correct answers.
Example: if you participate in all in-class assessments and answer 2/3 of the questions correctly, you will earn a total of 6 points (5 plus 1 bonus).

Quizzes

Approximately 12 online quizzes will be given throughout the session. Each quiz will be preceded by the practice quiz. Your quiz grade will be computed as follows

Taking the practice quiz before the announced deadline

20%

Regardless of the number of correct answers

Taking the quiz before the announced deadline

20%

Correct answers on the quiz

60%

Example: if you take the practice quiz before its deadline, and then take the quiz before its deadline obtaining 70% correct answers on it, then your overall quiz score that week will be 20%+20%+42%=82%.

Another example: if you skip the practice quiz, but get 100% on the quiz (taking it before the deadline), then your overall quiz score for that week is 80%.

Here are important rules concerning the quizzes:

  • Quizzes are "open book" and "open notes" but you are not allowed to use any calculators, or other computational devices, or accept anyone else's help. On the computer you are using to take the online quiz, you must not perform any other activity while taking the quiz.
  • Each quiz and the corresponding deadlines will be announced during the lecture. The current quiz should be accessed in the Current Quiz folder in the Assignments area of the Blackboard site. You will be allowed unlimited time and unlimited attempts on the practice quiz, but you will only be allowed one attempt and a limited amount of time to complete the quiz.
  • After the due date for the quiz, it will be moved to the Past Quizzes folder. At that point, you will be able to retake both the practice quiz and the quiz (e.g., when reviewing for a test), but these attempts will not affect your grade.
  • The two lowest quiz scores will be dropped from the student's record. They are intended to cover up to two absences due to an illness, or whatever other reason. Under exceptional circumstances, beyond the student's control (e.g. a hospitalization), if you miss more than two quizzes, an additional quiz score will be dropped.
  • No make-ups or late quizzes will be allowed.

Class Tests

Two class tests will be given. Both tests will be proctored, and will be conducted in paper-and-pencil format (not online). The tests are "closed book", "closed notes"; no calculators, or any other devices (including cellular phones) will be allowed. Both tests must be taken on the designated days (March 23 and April 13).

Students registered for the section meeting in Gornto 202 (CRN 28452) will be taking each test during the usual class time (10 am-12:40 pm).

Students attending the class at other locations or via Web Conferencing (any CRN other than 28452) must follow the procedures described on this page prior to each test in order to schedule a 160-minute period beginning no earlier than 10 am EST and ending no later than 5 pm EST on the designated day. The test appointments must be scheduled as soon as possible but not less than 4 business days before the test date.

There will be no make-ups. Under exceptional circumstances, beyond the student's control, if you miss a test, final exam grade may be recorded for ONE (and only ONE) missed test. You must provide an explanation of the reason for missing the test no later than one week after the test. If this explanation is approved by the instructor, the test grade will be adjusted. Otherwise, a score of zero will be entered for the missed test.

Final Exam

The Final will be a comprehensive, 3-hour exam. It will be proctored, and will be conducted in paper-and-pencil format (not online). The exam will be "closed book", "closed notes"; no calculators, or any other devices (including cellular phones) will be allowed. It must be taken on the designated day (May 4).

Students registered for the section meeting in Gornto 202 (CRN 28452) will be taking the final exam between 8:30 am and 11:30 am in Dragas Hall 2114.

Students attending the class at other locations or via Web Conferencing (any CRN other than 28452) must follow the procedures described on this page prior to the exam in order to schedule a 3-hour period beginning no earlier than 8:30 am EST and ending no later than 5 pm EST on Monday, May 4. The exam appointment must be scheduled as soon as possible but not less than 4 business days before the exam date.

Honor Code

Since each student signs an Honor Pledge when applying to the University, it follows that each piece of work submitted by a student must be his or her own work - this applies to all the work you will be asked to submit during this course (on paper or electronically), unless the instructor specifically states otherwise.

For additional information, refer to the ODU Honor Council web site http://www.odu.edu/AO/student_serv/hc/

Classroom Etiquette

All students are expected to follow appropriate classroom etiquette. Disruptive behavior may result in dismissal. Please contact the instructor to report any violations of classroom etiquette at your site.
